Dieter Rams "Less and More" interview

September 5 2010 16:27

Dieter Rams, one of the most influential designers of the 20th century, is interviewed by Gestalten.

Dieter Rams designed many memorable products for Braun, the German consumer products company, where he was the chief of design from 1961 to 1995. His clear visual language not only defined product design for decades, but also our fundamental understanding of what design is and what it can and should do.

Dieter Rams created ten rules of design more than twenty years ago. They are just as relevant today:

Good design...

  • is innovative
  • makes a product useful
  • is aesthetic
  • helps a product to be understood
  • is unobtrusive
  • is honest
  • is durable
  • is consistent to the last detail
  • is environmentally friendly
  • is as little design as possible
